Want some history and drama this weekend? Look no further then my list of these five must-see period films! I’m talking grand costumes, old English accents, power struggles and love that you’ll swoon over. Enjoy stepping back into time this weekend!

Elizabeth

Set in England in the 1500s, Elizabeth chronicles the early part of “The Virgin Queen’s” reign as the last monarch of the Tudor dynasty. Winning a best actress Golden Globe for her portrayal of the queen, Cate Blanchett packs a punch in this vivid film. This film offers great costumes and a quick lesson on how to maintain your independence while still having a fair share of suitors. (124 min., R)

Gangs of New York

The scene is set in a violent-torn New York in the Mid 1800s. The stars are Leonardo DiCaprio, Cameron Diaz and Daniel Day-Lewis. Over the course of three hours, director Martin Scorsese does a brilliant job of painting the picture of a wild and scary early NYC, all while a young man seeks revenge against his fathers killer and heads an uprising in the process. (167 min., R)

Shakespeare In Love

This charming film about ill-fated romance, introduces us to a young playwright who is out of ideas, until he meets his dream woman. Chaos ensues and he is inspired to write his play. Starring the always charming Gwyneth Paltrow and Joseph Fiennes, this is the perfect chick flick to watch with your girls. (123 min., R)

The Other Boleyn Girl

Two beautiful sisters fight for the love and favor of King Henry VIII, in order to bring their family status and wealth. Set in the early part of the 1500s, this love triangle ends in tragedy as the movie goes over one of the most shocking parts of Henry’s history…his exercise of killing his wives for personal gain. (115 min., PG-13)

Sense and Sensibility

Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet star in this adaptation of Jane Austin’s famed book. When their rich father dies and they don’t get a penny of his inheritance, two sisters set out to navigate life and love. (136 min., PG)
