(AP) — Public health officials are urging everyone six months of age and older to get a flu shot.
The Cook County Department of Public Health said in a statement Wednesday hospital emergency departments and area schools are seeing a spike in flu-like illness.
Interim Chief Operating Officer Sarah Martell said the flu vaccine is the best defense against the virus. She said it’s also important to prevent the spread of the illness by staying home if you’re sick, washing hands frequently and covering your cough and sneeze.
Young children, pregnant women, people age 65 and older and anyone with a weakened immune system may be at higher risk for complications from the flu.
