CHICAGO (AP) — Chicagoans can now send text messages to the city’s non-emergency 311 system.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced the innovation on Monday. It means that Chicagoans can use text messages to submit a service request, track the progress of the request and sign-up to receive an email when the issue is resolved. Residents also can sign up for city alerts based on their addresses.

The city says residents can now call, go online or text to access the 311 system.
