CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Public Library is celebrating the 90th birthday of late Chicago Mayor Harold Washington.

The library plans a program Thursday looking at how the Chicago Cultural Plan was initiated during Washington administration. A new cultural plan is under development under Mayor Rahm Emanuel.

The event will be at Chicago’s main library, the Harold Washington Library Center.

Washington was born April 15, 1922. He served as mayor of Chicago from 1983 until his death in office in 1987. The city’s last cultural plan was developed under Washington in 1986. It included the renovation of Navy Pier, the city’s downtown theater district and offering film project incentives.
