CRETE, Ill. (AP) — U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. is responding to Debbie Halvorson’s announcement that she will seek the Democratic nomination in Jackson’s 2nd Congressional District.

Jackson on Wednesday cited securing more than $900 million in federal investment in the district, which spans the southern Chicago area. The district has been redrawn. Halvorson says she will officially announce her candidacy Thursday at a restaurant in Chicago Heights near where she went to high school.

Jackson has served in Congress since 1995. He also cited efforts to build a new airport.

Halvorson previously represented Illinois’ 11th Congressional District for one term. She lost the seat to Republican Adam Kinzinger in the 2010 mid-term election. She previously served as Crete township clerk, Illinois state senator and state senate majority leader.
