CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago Public Schools officials report first day attendance reached a four year high of 94.7 percent, up from 92.9 percent last year.

CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago Public Schools officials report first day attendance reached a four year high of 94.7 percent, up from 92.9 percent last year.

School officials credited an aggressive campaign to build awareness among parents and students about attendance on the first day of classes on Tuesday. The campaign included phone banks, robo-calls to students’ homes from celebrities and Google and Facebook ads.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel also called on city department and agencies, businesses and community organizations to boost school attendance.

About a third of public schools started early on Aug. 8, and officials reported gains in first day numbers to 88.1 percent his year from 86.8 percent last year

Approximately 405,000 students attend more than 675 Chicago schools.
