CHICAGO (AP) — Students in the nation’s third largest school district may soon be spending more time in school.

CHICAGO (AP) — Students in the nation’s third largest school district may soon be spending more time in school.

Chicago Public Schools officials announced plans Tuesday for a longer school day and year starting next year. That includes 90 minutes more each day and two more weeks each year.

School officials say the district has one of the shortest school days nationwide.

The issue has become a political one, with Mayor Rahm Emanuel vowing to lengthen the day while on the campaign trail. Gov. Pat Quinn signed a law this year that gives CPS new powers to lengthen its school day and year without approval from the Chicago Teachers Union.

The union president says she won’t serve on a committee to determine how the plan will be implemented.

About 400,000 students attend CPS.
