Friday, representatives from the American Association of Retired Persons delivered petitions with 3,146 signatures from AARP members to U.S. Rep. Bobby Rush’s, D-1st, office in hopes of getting him and other congressman not to sign any budget legislation that would cut Social Security and Medicare benefits for the retired.

AARP wants to protect those benefits for the people the organization said worked for the

benefits.

“We feel that basically they worked for it so they deserve it,” said Laurinda Dodgen, AARP associate state director.

Some people are angered and upset at the fact that cutting Social Security and Medicare is even an option after some people planned for their retirement for so many years.

Republicans have proposed the cuts as a cost-saving measure for the nation.

“They want to do everything against the seniors because they are sitting so high. So I want to say to them, cut your checks and see how it feels,” said Hiola Alston, an AARP volunteer who helped deliver the petitions to Rush’s office. “Why do you think we can make it on his little bit of money?”

In hopes of stopping the cuts, many congressmen signed a letter address to President Barack Obama that stated how Social Security benefits should not be cut.

“We strongly believe that Social Security revenues must not be used for anything other than social security benefits. Whether the calculations are economic, political, or simply out of a sincere effort to make a deal, the price paid in breaking faith with the American people is too high,” congressmen stated in the letter.

Fifty-four members of Congress signed the letter.
