ComEd officials say there are still about 259,000 customers without power a day after strong winds and driving rains pounded northern Illinois.

CHICAGO (AP) — ComEd officials say there are still about 259,000 customers without power a day after strong winds and driving rains pounded northern Illinois.

A record 868,000 homes and businesses were left in the dark on Monday. Since then about 631,000 people have had their power restored.

ComEd officials say the hardest hit area was north of Chicago where about 148,000 customers were without power late Tuesday. About 33,000 ComEd customers in Chicago and its western suburbs were without power.

About 900 repair crews from Wisconsin, Indiana, Michigan and Illinois are working on restoring power.

ComEd officials don’t know exactly when all customers will have power again, but estimate it will be several days.
