CHICAGO (AP) — New Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel got a gift from the 50 aldermen who serve on the City Council.
Emanuel was presented with a new gavel in honor of his inauguration as Chicago’s 46th mayor during his first City Council meeting Wednesday.
The presentation of the gift was handled by powerful Chicago Alderman Ed Burke, who had backed another candidate in the mayor’s race.
Burke welcomed Emanuel to the council chambers on behalf of the aldermen for "effective leadership and collegial cooperation marked by goodwill."
Emanuel was inaugurated Monday as Chicago’s first new mayor in 22 years. He replaced Mayor Richard Daley, who retired.
