*1878: The fire escape ladder was patented by J. R. Winters. *1895: Black jockey James "Soup" Perkins guided Halma to victory in the Kentucky Derby. The 15-year-old joined fellow Black jockey Alonzo Clayton as the youngest jockey to ride a Derby winner.
