Another plan to rebuild landmark Pilgrim church in works

There is a new plan to rebuild Chicago’s historic, fire-damaged Pilgrim Baptist Church.

CHICAGO (AP) — There is a new plan to rebuild Chicago’s historic, fire-damaged Pilgrim Baptist Church.

Board of Trustee chairman Robert Vaughn tells the Chicago Tribune members of the church located in the city’s Bronzeville neighborhood have been meeting regularly with engineers and architects to get a plan in place. He says the plan will be unveiled Saturday.

Church officials in 2008 announced a $37 million rebuilding plan, but nothing came of it.

Pilgrim Baptist Church is the second occupant of the building, designed by famed architects Dankmar Adler and Louis Sullivan and built in 1891 as the Kehilath Anshe Ma’ariv Synagogue.

The building was heavily damaged in a January 2006 fire ignited by workers repairing the roof. The limestone and brick exterior walls are held up by a steel structural support system.
