Winfrey to receive Illinois broadcasting honor

Oprah Winfrey is to be inducted into the Illinois Broadcasters Association’s Hall of Fame in May.

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Oprah Winfrey is to be inducted into the Illinois Broadcasters Association’s Hall of Fame in May.

The group announced the honor for Winfrey on Monday. She will be inducted at a luncheon on May 3. Winfrey’s talk show, "The Oprah Winfrey Show," will go off the air this year after 25 years. Winfrey started the show in Chicago during the 1980s.

Association president and CEO Dennis Lyle called Winfrey "the epitome of broadcasting excellence."

Winfrey joins a list of Illinois broadcasting luminaries that includes movie reviewers Roger Ebert and Gene Siskel, late Cubs announce Harry Caray and comedian Jack Benny.
