BLUE ISLAND, Ill. (AP) — The mayor of the southern Chicago suburb of Blue Island says nearly two dozen students and ten adults were taken to hospitals because of hazardous materials.

Blue Island Mayor Don Peloquin says an intermediate school was evacuated Thursday and ambulances took the students to seven nearby hospitals as a precaution.

The mayor says a janitor mixed bleach with drain cleaner and was overcome by fumes. The school was evacuated after a number of complaints of shortness of breath.

The nursing supervisor at Blue Island’s Metro South Medical Center, who refused to give her name, said the people brought to the hospital were observed for adverse effects from the fumes and released.

Cook County School District 130 reported an accidental chemical reaction. Officials say the school will remain closed until Monday.
