ATLANTA (AP) — The personal papers of civil rights icon Andrew Young at the Auburn Avenue Research Library on African American Culture and History are now open to the public.

The collection was unveiled Sunday with documents, letters, photographs and other items that Young gathered during his time as one of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s closest aides, Atlanta mayor and U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. Young was with King when he was killed in Memphis in 1968.

The library is near Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, where King preached for years.
