The United States Postal Service whittled down its list of possible post office closures in the city from 24 to four, including three on the South Side. Last month the postal service announced a list of the sites under review for closure due to an expected $7 billion loss this fiscal year. Of the 48 post office locations in Chicago, three on the South Side remain at risk to close: 4642 S. Bishop, 2148 E. 71st St., and 10422 S. Ewing. The fourth location is 2405 N. Sheffield. A decision whether to shut the doors or keep them open won’t be made until input from the public is solicited, said a spokesperson for the USPS. The postal service is the only delivery service that reaches every address in the nation –– 149 million homes, offices and post office boxes –– six days a week. ______ Copyright 2009 Chicago Defender.
