Dear Chat Daddy,
I’m really concerned about my 10-year-old grandson who I’m raising alone. He has gained so much weight over the summer that he is not able to wear any of his school clothes from last year, and he is in the house playing video games and eating all the time. I feel really bad for my grandson because he is the biggest child on our block and the other children call him “Baby Huey” or “Fat Boy,” which really upsets us both. How can I help my grandson before his weight issue really gets out of hand?

Dear He’s Just Chubby,
Great letter. So many of our young people are gaining so much weight because of easy access to fast food that is packed full of salt and is extremely high in fats and sugar. Weight loss is all about eating the right foods and portion control. It seems to me that your grandson is packing on the weight due to the fact that he is taking in a high amount of calories and he is not being active enough to burn them all off. In order to lose the weight your grandson must be prepared for change. Start off by taking your grandson to see his doctor to make sure he is not suffering from any serious medical conditions. I’m sure your doctor can recommend some type of weight management and fitness program that will get him going. Also remember that your grandson is at the age where he is still growing and heredity plays a big role in his body type and his weight. At his age, he should be getting as much exercise as possible. The most important issue here is your grandson’s mental well-being. Throughout his weight loss process, it is important that you deal with the fact that the other children are teasing him about his weight. Try working out with your grandson while he is going through his weight loss. At his age, once he starts shedding the pounds he will gain a new attitude that will go along with his new slimmer body.
