Dear Chat Daddy,
I’m a 44-year-old single male, employed and the father of two teenage sons from a previous marriage. For the last three years I’ve been living with my girlfriend who is 36 years old, employed and has no children. I thought she and I had a good understanding until recently when the subject of marriage came up again. I’ve told her that I love her but because I had such a bad marriage the first time I don’t think I’m interested in getting married again. She went off telling me how she is ready for marriage, a baby and that all of her girls are married. Last week when I got home from work, my bags were packed and sitting by the door with a note saying when you are ready to be a husband give me a call. Chat Daddy, can something as small as not wanting to get married cause me to lose it all with my woman?
-Times Up, So Pick Your Choice
Dear Times Up, So Pick Your Choice,
Yes sir, it can cause you to lose it all simply because your girlfriend is looking for a commitment that will lead her to marriage. I’m sure at her age she has became frustrated with you and your non-committing ways. Telling her that you do not want to get married was like placing the final nail in her coffin. Most sisters today desire to be married because it gives them a real since of completion in their lives. Committed relationships also prove that our brothers really want to settle down with one woman. If you do indeed love this woman then you need to have a one-on-one conversation about your insecurities of not wanting to get married again so that you both have a clear understanding. Once a woman becomes skeptical about the state of her relationship status it becomes very hard for her to trust again. Here’s to you now fully understanding why your bags were packed and sitting by the door. Be encouraged.
