A few of the gospel industry’s stellar recording artists took to the Arie Crown Theater stage Friday for the Chicago Defender’s first ever The Sound Tour concert.

Sister singing duo Mary Mary – Stellar, Grammy and Dove Award winners – along with the Grammy-award winning Rev. Marvin Sapp, Kiki Sheard and Bill Moss had the audience on its feet for a praise party that rocked the house.

Soul 106.3-FM radio host, Darryl King, and comedian Ron Baker Jr. served as emcees for the concert.

The Sound Tour was part of the newspaper’s efforts at delving into non-traditional events and partnerships, according to Gary Gunter, Real Times Media’s vice president of integrated marketing and coordinator of the Chicago leg of the tour. Detroit-based Real Times Media Inc. is the parent company of the Chicago Defender. The tour also stopped in Detroit.

“It was a great success for it being the inaugural concert promotion for the Chicago Defender,” Gunter said. “Everyone left with a smile on their face and a newspaper in hand.”
