A word from the Defender president

As we embark on the holiday season, I would like to take a moment to thank all of our loyal readers and advertisers for their support throughout this year.

As we embark on the holiday season, I would like to take a moment to thank all of our loyal readers and advertisers for their support throughout this year.

This year, you embraced a major change in the Defender: Going from publishing four times a week to publishing once a week. As we approach 2009, the Defender will continue to provide readers with the best possible newspaper. We will continue to report concise, complete, relevant news and information that is of value to the African American community in Chicago and the surrounding area, and always be open to listening to you and responding to your comments accordingly.

In the coming year, the Defender looks forward to providing new and interesting coverage on subjects of increasing interest to our community: financial literacy, health, politics and community issues. Education and the health and welfare of our children will continue to get coverage by the Defender, on a weekly basis. We will continue to concentrate on the positive activities and achievements of our young people–in contrast to the general media’s concentration on negative events.

We look forward to moving in a new direction with the inauguration of President-elect Barack Obama and his vision for change over the next few years. We will embrace that change and continue to provide you with the best newspaper in the country. We ask that you continue to give us your support. Pick up the Defender each week or have it delivered directly to your home, and please support those companies and organizations that advertise in the Defender. Without their weekly ads, we would not be able to provide the quantity and quality coverage of events and information for you.

In closing, the Defender staff and its parent company, Real Times Media Inc., and I wish you and your family a happy, safe and prosperous holiday season.
