The pitching staff of the Jackie Robinson West Little League 11- and 12-year-old, all-star team continues to impress at the Illinois state tournament. In a first round game Thursday night, Marcellus Sneed extended his tournament record to 3-0 as he blanked Salem, 4-0. A two-run homer from shortstop Mike Kendrick and clutch defense from the entire team supported Sneed. The 11- and 12 year olds have allowed just one run in the state tournament and have tossed five shutouts thus far in nine tournament games. Tonight they will be looking to continue the outstanding pitching when they take on an undefeated Libertyville team. In other tournament action, the Jackie Robinson West 11 year olds will take on Evergreen Park tonight in Blue Island. The winner of the game will then advance to the state tournament beginning August 2 at Jackie Robinson Park. Meanwhile, head coach Mike Outten’s Jackie Robinson West Seniors will take the field against Elgin Continental today at 5:30 p.m., at Gwendolyn Brooks High School in the second round of the 15–16 year old state tournament. ______ Copyright 2008 Chicago Defender.
